When is Raksha Bandhan 2020 celebrated in India: Date & timing



The term Raksha Bandhan consists of two words, namely “Raksha” and “Bandhan.” According to Sanskrit terminology, Raksha Bandhan means, "the tie or knot of protection" where "Raksha" stands for the protection and "Bandhan" signifies to tie.

Raksha Bandhan is pious Hindu festival which is celebrated in India and countries like Nepal to express the love between a brother and a sister. The occasion of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in Shravana month during full moon day or Purnima day. The dates vary each year according to the position of the Moon.

The festival of thread signifies love not only between brother-sister relationships which does not mean just the blood relationships only. But also among cousins, sister and sister-in-law, maternal uncle (mama), fraternal aunt and nephew (Bhatija) and other such relations.

Significance of Raksha Bandhan among various religions in India

  1. Hinduism- Raksha Bandhan is mainly celebrated by the Hindus in the northern and western parts of India along with countries like Nepal, Pakistan and Mauritius.
  2. Jainism- The occasion is also revered by the Jain community where Jain priests give ceremonial threads to the devotees.
  3. Sikhism- This festival devoted to the brother-sister love is observed by the Sikhs as "Rakhardi" or Rakhari.
Origin of Raksha Bandhan Festival
  1. There are a number of different legends explaining the origin of Raksha Bandhan. In some cases, they are mythological while in others, they are historical.
  2. According to Hindu scriptures, when demons or Asuras defeated the king of gods, Indra, his wife Indrani tied a sacred yellow thread around his wrist. Fortified by its protection, he went on to fight and win the war.
  3. Goddess Lakshmi tied a rakhi on the wrist of demon king Bali requesting the return of her lord Vishnu who was guarding the door of Bali.
  4. In Mahabharata, queen Draupadi once tied a piece of yellow fabric torn from her own dress on the wrist of Krishna to heal his injury. Krishna was so touched by the action that he proclaimed it made him her brother and he now had the responsibility to protect her which he did repeatedly despite her five powerful husbands.

The best time to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is Aparahna. If that time is not available then Pradosh time is also suitable to perform rituals but the rituals should not be done during Bhadra.
